His grave marker reads 1817 but his estate was settled in the courts in 1816. One plausible explanation for this is that his grave marker, which is shared with his wife, Sophia, was crafted and placed some years after the death of both Michael and Sophia. There is reason to believe that it was commissioned by their grandson, Charles Read, based on the spelling of the name as "R-e-a-d." Charles is connected to most documents and other records using that spelling. Court documents were dated when written, and as such are more likely correct.
